I used to make this dish a lot when I was a little girl. In Dutch it is called wentelteefjes and we usually add some cinnamon to the egg and milk batter. Using sugarbread is a good way to make the french toast taste divine.

Recipe from Home Made by Yvette van Boven.

This recipe will make 12 slices of French toast.

4 eggs
200 ml milk
2 tbsp light brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
the zest of one lemon
12 slices sugarbread
75 g butter

Whisk eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest in a wide, shallow bowl. Place the bread into the egg mixture and let it soak up this mixture for a couple of minutes. Melt the butter in a skillet. Place the bread into the skillet and bake the slices brown on both sides. Make sure that the bread doesn’t brown too quickly, otherwise the custard will still be uncooked. Serve the wentelteefjes with icing sugar or caster sugar.
